Farmyard Infrastructure Assessment

FWAG’s Farmyard Infrastructure Assessment is a tailored advisory visit designed to help farmers improve their yard infrastructure, reduce pollution risks, and enhance long-term sustainability. This in-depth assessment focuses on slurry and silage storage, fuel and pesticide handling, yard runoff, and water management, ensuring compliance with regulations while identifying opportunities for environmental and economic benefits.

What the Assessment Covers

✅ Infrastructure Condition & Suitability – a full review of existing farmyard infrastructure, including slurry, manure, silage, fuel, and pesticide storage.
✅ Water Management & Drainage – identifying clean and dirty water pathways, runoff management, and improvements to drainage systems.
✅ Pollution Risk Reduction – addressing ammonia emissions, runoff control, and preventing point source and diffuse pollution.
✅ Farm Business Sustainability – assessing infrastructure suitability for farm type, future-proofing for economic and environmental resilience.
✅ Prioritised & Costed Recommendations – outlining no-cost, low-cost, and high-impact investments, including eligibility for capital grants and incentives.

What to Expect from the Visit

✅On-site measurement of key infrastructure to inform cost estimates and potential design work for improvements.
✅Photographic evidence to support risk identification and recommendations.
✅A detailed action plan covering:

  • Regulatory compliance – ensuring infrastructure meets SSAFO and Farming Rules for Water regulatory requirements.
  • Short- and long-term investment needs – cost-effective improvements with practical guidance.
  • Potential funding opportunities – identifying grants and incentives for capital projects.
  • Innovative solutions – options such as slurry covers, improved drainage, yard roofing, slurry separation, and sustainable manure handling systems.

Where relevant, the visit will also assess the planning implications of new infrastructure, particularly for farms in protected areas. If ammonia emissions are a factor, guidance on using SCAIL (Simple Calculation of Atmospheric Impact Limits) will be provided.

This advisory visit provides practical, expert-led guidance to enhance farm infrastructure, reduce environmental risks, and support long-term business viability.
